CV template for healthcare

A CV in the healthcare sector should show certifications, authorisations and practical clinical experience in a form that the ATS systems at Helse Sør-Øst, Akershus University Hospital and municipal health services handle correctly.

This template is built for nurses, doctors, healthcare workers, midwives and other authorised health personnel. It prioritises authorisation, clinical experience and further education, in the order recruiters in the sector actually look for them.

Recommended template: The industry template «Helse og omsorg» (Health and care) in the CV builder: single column with authorisations and courses lifted right below the profile

The healthcare sector often uses internal systems with strict text parsing. A classic single-column template with conventional section names gives the highest hit rate. Visual CVs with columns are often parsed wrongly, especially in the Norwegian Directorate of Health's and municipal application portals. Søknadsbasen's «Helse og omsorg» template is built on exactly this pattern and is rated high for ATS.

How to build a CV for the healthcare sector

Start with the authorisation section at the top, right below your contact details. Write out your HPR number if you are authorised, and include the date of authorisation. Many application portals have their own fields for HPR, and recruiters check it first.

Clinical experience comes as the main section. List the department, hospital or municipality, period and type of patients or treatment area. For each role, describe three to five concrete tasks or results, not just areas of responsibility.

Further education, courses and certifications are a separate section. Include ALS, BLS, anaesthesia nursing, intensive care nursing, a master's in midwifery, or other certifications relevant to the job you are applying for.

Finish with languages and IT systems. The healthcare sector uses DIPS, Gerica, CosDoc, Imatis and others. If you list them specifically, you score higher in ATS searches.

Common mistakes in a healthcare CV

  • −Forgetting your HPR number or authorisation date. Recruiters often use the HPR field for the first filtering.
  • −Writing 'nurse' without specifying the department or specialist field. 'Nurse at the surgical department' gives 50 per cent more ATS hits than just 'nurse'.
  • −Skipping IT systems. DIPS experience is in demand and should be in the skills section.
  • −Long descriptions without numbers. 'Responsible for medication management' says less than 'Managed the medication stock for a 40-bed department with zero deviations at audit'.

Roles this template suits

Nurse, Specialist nurse, Healthcare worker, Doctor, Midwife, Biomedical laboratory scientist, Social educator (vernepleier), Physiotherapist.

Common questions

Do I have to include my HPR number in the CV?
If you are authorised health personnel, yes. The HPR number confirms the authorisation and lets the employer verify it in the Norwegian Register of Health Personnel. Write it in your contact details or in the authorisation section at the top.
What about shifts and rotas in the CV?
You don't need to detail shift types, but mention 'three-shift rota' or 'weekend and holiday rota' if it is relevant to the job. It shows that you know the way of working in the sector.
Should I include patient numbers or department size?
Yes, if the numbers are concrete. 'Nurse at a 24-bed medical department with 200 daily patient contacts' gives more context than just 'nurse at a medical department'.
