About Us:
At SurplusMap, we are revolutionizing green infrastructure and sustainable mobility through data-driven, AI-powered technology. Our platform is at the forefront of EV charging infrastructure development, geospatial data analysis, and energy forecasting, with ongoing projects supported by leading European tech organizations such as ESA, EIT Urban Mobility, and backed by investors like Equinor-Techstars, Simula, and Bentley Systems.
Join us in accelerating the green transition across Europe as we scale our platform to optimize sustainable mobility and energy solutions.
The Role:
As a Data Engineer Intern at SurplusMap, you will play a pivotal role in supporting our data pipelines and infrastructure. You’ll collaborate with our engineering and data science teams to help maintain efficient and scalable data architectures. Working alongside our Senior Data Engineer, you will gain hands-on experience with large datasets, ETL processes, and cutting-edge AI tools to power the green energy transition.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone eager to grow their technical skills and contribute to impactful projects aimed at electrifying the transportation industry and achieving cleaner cities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with our engineering and data science teams to design, develop, and maintain data pipelines, including ETL processes.
- Implement and optimize data storage solutions using Google Cloud products like BigQuery.
- Work with DBT and Dataform to build robust data transformation workflows.
- Assist in managing cloud infrastructure with Terraform (nice to have).
- Ensure data integrity and security across our platform by following best practices in data engineering.
- Support AI-powered models for EV charger utilization, energy load forecasting, and geospatial analysis.
- Participate in the design and development of scalable data architectures, contributing to projects aimed at optimizing sustainable mobility solutions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on projects that integrate machine learning models for energy and infrastructure predictions.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong proficiency in Google Cloud products (especially BigQuery).
- Hands-on experience with SQL for querying large datasets.
- Familiarity with DBT, Dataform, or similar tools for data transformations.
- Basic knowledge of Python for scripting and automation.
- Exposure to Terraform for infrastructure-as-code is a plus.
- Understanding of data pipeline design, optimization, and ETL processes.
- Interest in AI, geospatial data, and green energy technologies (experience with GIS tools or similar is a bonus).
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and in collaboration with diverse teams.
- Eagerness to learn and grow within a dynamic startup environment.
What We Offer:
- Mentorship and growth opportunities working directly with our Senior Data Engineer and exposure to industry leaders like Simula.
- Work on cutting-edge projects in the EV charging infrastructure and green energy space.
- Opportunity to collaborate with world-class partners like the European Space Agency and EIT Urban Mobility.
- A vibrant, innovative startup environment with flexible working hours at our office in StartupLab in Oslo.
- Be part of a mission-driven team dedicated to bold innovation, sustainability, and creating positive environmental impact.
Preferred Location:
We prefer candidates based in Oslo, but we are open to remote positions for the right candidate.

Introduction to SurplusMap
SurplusMap is on a mission to revolutionize the way we develop and optimize EV charging infrastructure. By leveraging advanced geospatial tools and machine learning models, we empower energy companies, local utilities, and charge point operators to make informed decisions about site selection and utilization prediction. This ensures the efficient and effective deployment of charging stations, addressing a critical need in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market. Our secret advantage is our ability to draw on Norway's leadership in EV infrastructure, combined with our collaborations with top-tier partners like Google and Bentley Systems, to deliver cutting-edge solutions.
The challenge we face is significant: the current pace of infrastructure development is insufficient to meet the future demands of the booming EV market. The market is highly fragmented, causing inconvenience for EV users and difficulties for energy companies and local utilities trying to optimize their investments. For instance, the EU mandates the installation of 6,000 new charging points per week by 2030, a target that is far from being met with the current rate of deployment. This gap presents a substantial opportunity for innovative solutions like SurplusMap to make a real difference.
At SurplusMap, we focus on ensuring our customers invest wisely. Our sophisticated, map-based software integrates geospatial data and machine learning algorithms to pinpoint optimal sites for new charging stations. This means our clients can invest in the right locations, install the ideal number of chargers, and maintain high utilization rates over time. By doing so, we help them maximize their investments and build a robust EV infrastructure network that meets the demands of the future.
We are driven by a vision of cleaner, more sustainable cities. Electric vehicles are crucial in reducing air pollution and creating healthier urban environments. However, the key to this transition lies in the efficient deployment of charging infrastructure that provides greater flexibility to the energy grid, allowing for more renewable energy sources to be integrated. At SurplusMap, we are passionate about facilitating this energy transition.
By optimizing EV charging infrastructure, we help accelerate the shift to cleaner energy, positively impacting both the environment and the communities we live in.
Join us in our mission to create a greener, more sustainable future through innovative technology and strategic planning. Together, we can drive the change needed to make our cities cleaner and our energy systems more resilient.
